A little background

aganzo de Arriba’s origins are said to date back to Roman times: a funerary inscription found in Villamanta mentions a certain Aplondus Dagencium, a name that several historians link to the current place name, suggesting the prior existence of a Carpetani settlement in the area. There are two theories regarding the origin of the word “Daganzo”: it may derive from the Arabic “taqa” (a row of bricks in a kiln) or from the Latin “daca” (dagger). The first settlement was located next to the Torote River, at the site where the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Espino stands today, at the junction of the old road to Talamanca. In the late 12th and early 13th centuries, it was repopulated by Christians, with Muslims, Jews, and the new settlers living side by side. In 1469, King Henry IV granted Lorenzo Hurtado de Mendoza the County of Coruña along with the lordship of Daganzo, a grant confirmed in 1480 by the Catholic Monarchs to his son Bernardino de Mendoza y Borbón. In 1542, the 3rd Count of Coruña promoted agricultural and livestock farming on the lands of the manor known as “del Almazanejo,” which led to significant population and economic growth in the municipality.
