Elche/Elx Estadio Martínez Valero Street Market
The Martínez Valero Street Market is the largest street market in Elche and one of the busiest Sunday shopping events in the southern part of the province. It occupies the parking lot of the Elche CF stadium: a flat surface with no slopes or narrow sections, which allows for wide aisles and the placement of several hundred stalls without the congestion typical of street markets. The offerings are divided into three sections. The first is for fresh produce, featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables, much of which comes from the Camp d’Elx itself, giving the market a clear role as a direct-to-consumer channel for local farmers. The second section features pantry items: honey, spices, cheeses, cured meats, salted fish, and pickles, with a notable presence of local producers. The third section, the largest in terms of the number of stalls, features non-food items: clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, toys, household goods, gardening supplies, and the miscellaneous goods typical of large, general-interest markets. In addition to its commercial function, the market serves a social purpose: for many families in Elche, as well as visitors from Crevillent, Santa Pola, or Aspe, Sunday mornings at the Martínez Valero Market are a well-established routine.

A little background

he flea market relies on infrastructure originally built for another purpose. The Manuel Martínez Valero Stadium opened in September 1976—its name honors a former club president—and its large parking lot lay idle on days when there were no soccer games. Street vendors took advantage of this gap, and over the years it grew into one of the busiest Sunday markets in the Valencian Community, operated under a private concession set to expire in 2042.
In March 2023, the market came to a sudden halt. Elche CF barred vendors from the premises on Thursday, the 9th, disputing the interpretation of the contract and, in particular, how the market’s expansion to Thursdays had been communicated to them. The stalemate dragged on for months. In April, the market vendors gathered in Plaça de Baix; Mayor Carlos González met with them at City Hall alongside the council members for Markets and Street Markets and for Sports, although the city made it clear that the matter was a legal dispute between two private companies already before the courts and, therefore, beyond its capacity to mediate.
The ruling came through the courts and favored the concessionary companies. The market reopened on Sunday, November 5, 2023, with 220 confirmed stalls and also resumed its Thursday sessions, with nearly 90 stalls. Coinciding with the reopening, the city transit system extended lines E and F to the stadium area.
The conflict itself served to highlight the market’s scale: during the dispute, the concessionaire estimated that the market generated more than 400 direct jobs per week, an equivalent volume of indirect employment, and an average daily attendance of over 12,000 people.
