La Encarnación Market
The Encarnación Market is the food market located on the ground floor of the Metropol Parasol, the large wooden and concrete structure popularly known as Las Setas de Sevilla. Located in the heart of the Old Town, between the Plaza de la Encarnación and the Plaza de la Regina, it houses around forty stalls selling fresh produce—fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, baked goods, and pickles—alongside tapas bars and gourmet delis. It’s a regular stop for both locals doing their daily shopping and visitors who combine a trip to the market with a visit to the panoramic viewpoint or the Antiquarium archaeological museum located in the basement of the same complex.

A little background

ince the 19th century, Plaza de la Encarnación has been home to Seville’s first covered food market, built on the site of the former Convent of La Encarnación. That 19th-century building, which at one time housed hundreds of stalls, was demolished in 1973 due to structural problems and the rise of the first supermarkets, leaving the site as a temporary parking lot for decades. In 2004, the City Council launched an international competition to redevelop the plaza; of the 65 proposals submitted, the winning project was the Metropol Parasol by German architect Jürgen Mayer. Construction began in 2005 and was marked by technical controversies, Roman and Almohad archaeological discoveries, and cost overruns that multiplied the initial budget. The new complex was inaugurated on March 27, 2011, and features the current Mercado de la Encarnación on its ground floor, an event space on the street level, the Antiquarium museum in the basement, and an elevated walkway with an observation deck on the roof. In 2013, the city officially adopted the popular nickname as the trademark “Setas de Sevilla.”

How to Get a Stall in the La Encarnación Market Market
Would you like to set up a stall at the La Encarnación Market market, located at Sevilla? Since this is a permanent (food) market hall, access to a stall is not handled as street vending: it is obtained through a concession, lease, or transfer of an existing stall, typically through the town council or the merchants’ association that manages the market.
La Encarnación Market opens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Sevilla town council; please check it before submitting your application.
When a stall becomes available, it is usually awarded through direct concession; if there are multiple interested parties, the town council may hold a public selection process with a waiting list. The transfer of an already occupied stall, if permitted, is negotiated with the outgoing owner and requires municipal approval. You can download the municipal ordinance on markets from Sevilla (check the town council's official website to make sure it's still in effect, in case it has been updated).
You can contact the Sevilla town council at 010lineasevilla@sevilla.org.
- Contact the town council's commerce or markets department, or the market merchants' association
- Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, and proof that you are up to date with your tax and Social Security obligations
- Submit the application for a concession, lease, or transfer of the stall
- Pay the applicable municipal fee or tax, if required by the town council
- Pick up your pass and take your assigned stall
