Rastrillo Nuevo Futuro

Madrid, Madrid

The Rastrillo Nuevo Futuro is the biggest charity market on Madrid’s calendar and one of Spain’s longest-running charity events. Organized every November by the Nuevo Futuro Foundation, it brings together dozens of themed stalls (fashion, home decor, antiques, toys, books, food, accessories, art) run entirely by volunteers for about ten days. All proceeds go toward funding the homes where the organization cares for children and young people who cannot live with their families and are under the guardianship of public authorities. In recent years, it has been held in exhibition halls in central Madrid, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

History

A little background

l Rastrillo was founded in Madrid in 1968 by Carmen Herrero Garralda and a group of friends who were seeking to raise funds to support the first shelter opened by the Nuevo Futuro association. That first event was an impromptu flea market held in a garage in the capital, where furniture and items donated by family and friends were sold. The event raised 3.5 million pesetas, a sum that made it possible to open two new shelters and consolidate the model. Over the years, the Rastrillo moved from garages and donated spaces to large exhibition halls, expanded to other Spanish cities, and became a symbol of volunteerism in Madrid. In 2025, it celebrated its 54th edition, marking more than half a century of uninterrupted commitment to children in foster care.
