History

A little background

Artzain Eguna - Día del Pastor de Amurrio — history

rtzain Eguna, or Amurrio Shepherds' Day, is an annual livestock fair that pays tribute to the shepherds of the region. It is held on the third Sunday in September and centers around the Interprovincial Latxa Sheep Competition, along with the Idiazabal Designation of Origin shepherd’s cheese competition.

The program combines livestock activities with sheep shearing and cheese-making demonstrations, a herding dog show, tastings, and stalls selling homemade products and crafts. In 2025, the 31st edition was held, featuring more than a hundred Latxa sheep, which places the fair’s inception in the mid-1990s.
