ls Encants Vells, officially known as the Mercat Fira de Bellcaire, is considered one of the oldest flea markets and auction houses in Europe, with origins dating back to the 13th or 14th century. Born from the fusion of the ancient tradition of the “encants” (public auctions conducted by callers) and the Fira de Bellcaire, the market changed locations several times throughout the city—from the Rambla to the Consolat de Mar and Avenida Mistral—until it settled in 1928, initially on a temporary basis, in Plaça de les Glòries, where it remained for more than eighty years. On September 25, 2013, its current building—designed by the architectural firm b720 and recognizable by its large roof of gilded mirrors—was inaugurated across the square, becoming part of Barcelona’s network of indoor markets.
