Betanzos Medieval Fair
The Betanzos Medieval Fair is one of the most unique festive events in the province of A Coruña and one of the most historically accurate medieval markets in Galicia. Every summer, the Betanzos Medieval Fair takes over the historic district of Betanzos dos Cabaleiros —one of the seven capitals of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia—with stalls selling leather goods, pottery, gold and silverwork, woolen textiles, and wrought iron, as well as beekeepers offering honey from the Mariñas region and tavern keepers serving local wine in clay jugs. During the Betanzos Medieval Fair, the cobblestone streets of the old town—designated a Historic-Artistic Site—become a living stage, with locals and visitors dressed in period costumes, medieval meals served in the squares, and performances by minstrels. It’s a must-see event for discovering Betanzos’ heritage and the artisanal products of the Mariñas region of A Coruña.

A little background

etanzos was one of the seven historic provinces of the Kingdom of Galicia and a medieval town of great commercial importance. In 1467, King Henry IV of Castile granted Betanzos the privilege of holding a “Feria Franca” consisting of two annual fairs, exempt from taxes, which established the town as one of the main commercial centers of northern Spain during the Late Middle Ages. This historical privilege is the documented origin of the current Betanzos Medieval Free Fair.
Revived in the 2000s by the Betanzos City Council, the Betanzos Medieval Fair is held every summer in the historic district. The fair is based on documentary research into daily life in the Late Middle Ages in the Mariñas region of A Coruña and has received several distinctions, including the designation as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2011. Today, it is a must-see event on Galicia’s festival calendar and an opportunity to discover Betanzos’ medieval heritage amid the scents of firewood, incense, and mead.
