History

A little background

Mercadillo Ausiàs March — history

he flea market has been held in this part of Carrús for decades—a neighborhood with a strong commercial and industrial tradition (historically linked to the footwear industry) and one of the most densely populated areas in Elche. Although it shares its name and location with the permanent market in Plaza de Barcelona—whose origins date back to 1967–1970— the street market itself has traditionally functioned as an open-air extension of that commercial activity, stretching along Ausiàs March and nearby streets such as Ginés García Esquitino and Olegario Domarco Seller.

The most significant event in its recent history came with the renovation of Ausiàs March Avenue itself, approved by the Elche City Council as part of a plan to modernize the Carrús neighborhood. The construction project—with an investment of 411,400 euros—included the renovation of sidewalks and the roadway, new street furniture, trees with drip irrigation, and updated lighting.

How to Get a Stall at the Mercadillo Ausiàs March

Would you like to set up a stall at the Mercadillo Ausiàs March market, located at Elche? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Mercadillo Ausiàs March is held on Mondays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Elche town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Elche (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

Check the procedure on the Elche town council website: https://www.elche.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
