History

A little background

Babel Street Market — history

he Babel neighborhood emerged as a working-class expansion of Alicante in the 1940s, next to the old freight station, and very early on became home to a street market linked to the Mercado de Abastos, which remains its focal point to this day. The Alicante City Council regulates street vending through a specific municipal ordinance, and the Babel market is one of the city’s most traditional and well-established street markets. Over the decades, it has seen generations of street vendors come and go: families from Alicante’s own agricultural belt, from the Lower Vinalopó region, and, more recently, vendors of Maghrebi and Eastern European origin who have diversified the selection of clothing.

How to Get a Stall at the Babel Street Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the Babel Street Market market, located at Alicante? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Babel Street Market is held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Alicante town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Alicante (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

Check the procedure on the Alicante town council website: https://www.alicante.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
