History

A little background

El Cabañal Street Market — history

he roots of the El Cabanyal Street Market are intertwined with the history of the seaside neighborhood of the same name, one of the oldest and most distinctive in Valencia, which has been a hub of intense commercial activity for centuries due to its strategic location by the sea and the port. The market emerged as a natural extension of that commercial tradition, in which local fishermen and merchants exchanged goods and fresh produce.

The first market in the El Cabanyal neighborhood was built in the 19th century, and the current one dates back to 1958; today, it is one of the largest weekly markets in the Valencian Community, with more than four hundred stalls. It is held on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., except on the days before public holidays, and is part of the City of Valencia’s official calendar of special street markets.

For Merchants

How to Get a Stall at the El Cabañal Street Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the El Cabañal Street Market market, located at Valencia? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

El Cabañal Street Market is held on Thursdays. The exact fee is set by the Valencia town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Valencia (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

Check the procedure on the Valencia town council website: https://www.valencia.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
