History

A little background

El Jueves Street Market — history

he first documented reference to the Thursday Market dates back to 1292, when King Sancho IV of Castile established regulations for it, although it is believed that its origins predate this and may be linked to the souks of Muslim Seville prior to the Christian conquest of 1248. As early as the 17th century, Cervantes mentioned it in his exemplary novel *Rinconete y Cortadillo* (1613), attesting to its continued vitality in the Modern Age. Although historically the market was called “Thursday” because of the day it was held, it was not permanently established on what is now Calle Feria until the 19th century. It is held every Thursday of the year, with the sole traditional exception of Holy Thursday. Over the centuries, the goods sold there have changed—from fresh produce and livestock to the current selection of antiques and secondhand items—but it remains one of the oldest active street markets in Spain.

How to Get a Stall at the El Jueves Street Market

El Jueves Street Market is held on Thursdays. The exact fee is set by the Sevilla town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Sevilla (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).
