A little background

he Plaza del Fontan developed around a spring-fed lagoon that served for centuries as a recreational area for the local nobility and, over time, became a gathering place for farmers and craftsmen to sell their goods. The pond was drained on August 19, 1523, for health reasons, and in 1559, the construction of a washhouse and a fountain in the area was completed. The current fountain dates from 1657 and was restored in 1988. The major renovation that gave the plaza its rectangular market layout was carried out by architect Francisco Pruneda y Canal on June 11, 1792. In 1996, the square underwent a controversial demolition and comprehensive reconstruction, reopening on May 7, 1997, under the leadership of then-Mayor Gabino de Lorenzo. Adjacent to it stands the El Fontan covered market, built in 1885, and the plaza itself continues to host a street market on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
