Luarca Street Market

Luarca, Asturias

The Luarca Street Market is one of the liveliest weekly events in western Asturias, held in the fishing town of Luarca, the capital of the Valdés municipality. The Luarca Street Market sets up its stalls throughout the streets and squares of the town center—known as the “White Town” on the Costa Verde—featuring clothing, footwear, food, handicrafts, plants, and household items that attract both locals and summer visitors from western Asturias. Complemented by the activity at the Luarca Fish Market and the produce market, the Luarca Street Market is an ideal place to discover Asturian cuisine from the Cantabrian coast and the flavors of western Asturias: northern bonito, skewered hake, cheeses from Afuega’l Pitu, and Valdesana apple ciders. With the fishing port in the background and the sea mist of the Cantabrian Sea, it is a must-see destination for tourists on the Asturian Costa Verde.

A little background

Luarca Street Market — history

uarca is the capital of the Valdés municipality, in western Asturias, and a fishing town with centuries of fishing and commercial tradition. Its weekly markets have been documented since modern times, and its role as the commercial hub of western Asturias was solidified throughout the 19th century, when the town grew thanks to the canning industry and emigration to the Americas.

Today’s Luarca Street Market is regulated by the Valdés City Council and is held weekly in the center of the “white town” on the Costa Verde. It is a must-see destination for summer tourists in western Asturias and an excellent gateway to local products from the Cantabrian Sea and the seafaring life of the Valdés municipality.
