Arte de Sant Josep Oriol Street Market

Barcelona, Barcelona

The Mercat de Sant Josep, popularly known as La Boqueria, is Barcelona’s most iconic municipal market and one of the most visited in Europe. It is located right on La Rambla, in the Ciutat Vella district, and covers an area of about 2,583 square meters under a large 20th-century metal roof. It features more than three hundred stalls specializing primarily in fresh produce: fish and seafood, fruits and vegetables, meats, cured meats, cheeses, nuts, spices, and prepared foods. It combines daily use by locals and restaurant owners with a strong tourist presence, and its most well-known entrance is the Modernist arch opening onto La Rambla. It has been designated a cultural asset of local interest and is a frequent subject of studies on the evolution of traditional markets.

History

A little background

Arte de Sant Josep Oriol Street Market — history

he presence of market stalls on the Boqueria plain has been documented since 1217, when the existence of meat stalls at the gates of the medieval city was first mentioned. The current market was built on the site of the former convent of the Discalced Carmelites of San José, which was burned down during the anticlerical revolt of July 1835 and from which it took its official name. The cornerstone of the market was laid on March 19, 1840, based on a design by architect Josep Mas i Vila, and the surrounding plaza was laid out by Francesc Daniel Molina. In 1913, the market was embellished with the Modernist entrance arch facing La Rambla, designed by Antoni de Falguera, and the following year, the current metal roof was completed. Between 1998 and 2001, architects Lluís Clotet and Ignacio Paricio oversaw a comprehensive renovation of the sales area, which modernized the facilities without altering their historic character.
