Atarazanas Central Market

Málaga, Málaga

The Atarazanas Central Market is Málaga’s main municipal food market and a culinary landmark in the historic district. The building, in the Neo-Arabic style with an iron framework clad in stone and masonry, features a monumental 14th-century Nasrid portal on its main façade—the sole remnant of the ancient Muslim shipyards that once stood on this site when the city was situated by the sea. Beneath its large central nave are three sales areas specializing in fish and seafood, meat, and fruits and vegetables, complemented by tapas bars that feature fresh produce from the fish market. Its interior stained-glass windows, featuring motifs from the city’s history, and the overhead light that bathes the central aisle make it one of the most distinctive 19th-century markets in Andalusia.

History

A little background

Atarazanas Central Market — history

he market grounds occupy the site of the former Nasrid atarazanas, the Muslim shipyards where ships were built and repaired when the sea reached this part of the city. After the Christian conquest of Málaga in 1487, the original building was successively repurposed as a convent, military barracks, hospital, and school, until by the 19th century the old structure had fallen into ruin. Between 1876 and 1879, architect Joaquín de Rucoba built the current market, taking advantage of the boom in iron architecture. Rucoba had the foresight to preserve and reintegrate into the new façade the white marble horseshoe arch from the Nasrid entrance, crowned by two coats of arms bearing the motto “Only God is Victorious” of Sultan Muhammad V. The metal structure was manufactured at the San Antonio Foundry in Seville, the same foundry that built the Triana Bridge. The building was designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1979, and between 2008 and 2010, it underwent a complete restoration that restored the stained-glass windows and modernized the facilities without altering its historic appearance.
