El Palo Street Market

Málaga, Málaga

The El Palo Market is the municipal market of the seaside neighborhood of El Palo, in the Eastern District of Málaga—one of the most traditional areas on the city’s eastern coast and the birthplace of fried fish. This Málaga food market has about 70 stalls spread over an area of nearly 1,680 square meters, and its offerings center on the day’s catch from the Mediterranean, Victorian-style anchovies, fine shellfish, and other fresh products associated with Andalusian cuisine. The El Palo Market in Málaga is an essential gathering place for residents of the seaside neighborhood and for visitors seeking to enjoy the authentic fishing atmosphere of the Costa del Sol. Its façade, with a distinctive buttoned-glass front reminiscent of early 20th-century train stations, and the bustle of its stalls amid the scents of the sea, garlic, and saffron, attract thousands of people to the El Palo Market every year.

History

A little background

El Palo Street Market — history

efore the current El Palo Market was built, fish and vegetables were sold at street stalls along Calle Real in El Palo, where frequent flooding put the merchandise at risk and conditions were difficult due to the odors from the nearby slaughterhouse. The cornerstone of the El Palo Municipal Market was laid on April 25, 1962, and the building was inaugurated sixteen months later, on August 26, 1963, with a solemn blessing and in the presence of municipal authorities.

Over the course of its seven decades of history, the El Palo Market in Málaga has been located at four different sites, until the current building was constructed in 2006 on the site of the previous one. This latest renovation significantly improved conditions for both the vendors and the neighborhood itself, cementing El Palo Market’s status as an essential stop on any tour of Málaga’s markets and a must-visit destination for experiencing Andalusia’s finest seafood cuisine.

How to Get a Stall at the El Palo Street Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the El Palo Street Market market, located at Málaga? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

El Palo Street Market is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Málaga town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Málaga (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

You can contact the Málaga town council at viapublica@malaga.eu.
