History

A little background

La Boqueria (Sant Josep) Market — history

he market’s origins date back to 1586, when the convent of the Discalced Carmelites of San José was established on the site it occupies today. After the convent burned down during the anticlerical riots of July 25, 1835, the space became available for commercial use. The market became a permanent fixture in 1840, with construction on the roof symbolically beginning on St. Joseph’s Day, and in 1914 the current metal roof—which today characterizes the building—was inaugurated. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, it has undergone successive renovations, the last of which was completed in the year 2000, establishing itself as the most visited market with the greatest variety of goods in Catalonia, with vendors who now also offer Japanese, Italian, Greek, and Arab specialties alongside the traditional local produce.

How to Get a Stall at the La Boqueria (Sant Josep) Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the La Boqueria (Sant Josep) Market market, located at Barcelona? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

La Boqueria (Sant Josep) Market is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Barcelona town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Barcelona (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).
