Majadahonda Street Market

Majadahonda, Madrid

The Majadahonda street market is held right in the heart of the city, on the plot bounded by Erillas Street, Santa Catalina Street, and Calle de la Luna: With 10,000 square meters and 156 stalls, it’s one of the most vibrant street markets in Spain and a destination known far beyond the Community of Madrid. It’s open two days a week. On Tuesdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On Saturdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—half an hour longer—which is when it really gets crowded. The Majadahonda Market is one of the most popular and visited street markets in the Community of Madrid, considered a true symbol of the town and a tourist and commercial landmark that attracts visitors every week from numerous towns in the region and even from other provinces. It features around 180 stalls—according to other sources, up to 300—with a wide variety of offerings ranging from food products such as fruit and vegetables to crafts, pottery, plants and flowers, jewelry, fashion accessories, footwear, leather goods, hardware, and household items. Each stall retains its own personality and charm, with many featuring fitting rooms and mirrors so customers can try on clothes before buying them, turning the visit into a complete and personal shopping experience. In recent years, moreover, the rise of social media has skyrocketed its popularity beyond Madrid, establishing it as a true phenomenon that combines tradition, local commerce, and a unique experience for those who visit.

History

A little background

he Majadahonda Street Market has a history spanning more than thirty years, and its origins date back to an open field across from the Santa Catalina Parish Church, where the first stalls were set up. At that time, it operated up to three days a week—Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays—and vendors set up shop in front of the now-defunct Tahona bakery and, on occasion, in the Plaza del Cura, where the municipal bailiff would stop by to collect fees from each stall. Over the decades, the street market gradually moved and expanded until it reached its current layout between Santa Catalina and Erillas streets. Many of its pioneering vendors—some from nearby towns like Pinto—have been faithfully attending their weekly market days for over thirty years, serving as firsthand witnesses to this evolution and passing down the trade from generation to generation. What began as a modest local market has grown over time to become one of the most iconic and well-known street markets in the Community of Madrid, a process that the town council itself has publicly highlighted, presenting it in 2024 as a “success story” in the modernization of street vending in the region.
