Moratalla Street Market
Moratalla’s weekly street market, located in the town center: Stalls are set up along Lucas Egea Street and extend into the adjacent streets of Alfredo Rubio and Huerto Ramayo, just a few meters from City Hall. It is a small-to-medium-sized general market featuring textiles and clothing, footwear, accessories and costume jewelry, kitchenware and household items, seasonal fruits and vegetables, nuts, plants, and flowers, as well as stalls offering local products from the Northwest region (olive oil, almonds, apricots, cured meats, and mountain honey). Since Moratalla is the third-largest municipality in the Region of Murcia, covering nearly 1,000 km² and comprising numerous hamlets scattered throughout the mountains, Saturday mornings also serve as a weekly meeting point between the town center and these outlying areas, which has a direct impact on the hospitality industry and small businesses in the town center.

A little background

oratalla became an independent municipality in 1245, following the Castilian conquest of the Taifa kingdom of Murcia, and established itself during the Early Modern Period as a town dedicated to the cult of St. James with an agrarian and forestry-based economy: for centuries, its main trade goods were wood, wine, olive oil, and esparto grass, although the poor state of transportation infrastructure limited the shipment of these goods beyond the town’s borders and reinforced the importance of local trade within the municipality itself. A significant documentary record remains of that fair tradition: the town’s main festivities were originally held in September to coincide with the fair, and it was only after the “Miracle of the Holy Christ of the Lightning” on June 15, 1621, that they were moved to June–July, confirming that the town already had its own commercial calendar linked to the annual fair at that time. The current weekly market is a direct descendant of the model of periodic street vending that became widespread in municipalities throughout Murcia during the 20th century: a street market that originated as an extension of the agri-food supply from the fertile plains and the mountains, where residents and farmers from the outlying districts would come down to sell their surplus produce and stock up on supplies, and which, with the professionalization of the sector and the enactment of regulations governing street vending, was organized into a fixed space within the town center, with stalls allocated through municipal authorization, a site plan, a fee for occupying public space, and inspections. Since then, Lucas Egea Street and its adjacent streets have remained the permanent location for the Saturday market, a format that today coexists with other one-time commercial events, such as the Crafts and Medieval Market held in the old town between late October and early November. No specific year of establishment has been identified for this market.
