A little background
he San Agustín Market stands on the site of an earlier market with much simpler facilities. Starting in 1898, several architects, including Pedro Mariño and Antonio de Mesa, submitted three proposals to build an iron market, all of which were rejected for economic reasons: during the interwar period, the scarcity of that material made the project unfeasible.
The final design was drawn up in 1932 by municipal architects Santiago Rey Pedreira and Antonio Tenreiro, and construction continued until 1938. Both architects adopted the structural, formal, and functional design of Les Halles Centrales in Reims, designed by Émile Maigrot and built by engineer Eugène Freyssinet between 1927 and 1929: a parabolic roof formed by a concrete slab barely fifteen centimeters thick, interrupted by bands of glass that illuminate the interior.
The result placed A Coruña at the forefront of European architecture in the 1930s. The building is listed in the Docomomo Ibérico catalog—dedicated to the documentation and preservation of the Modern Movement—as one of the selected works from A Coruña.
