San Miguel Market

Madrid, Madrid

The San Miguel Market is a gourmet market located in the square of the same name in Madrid, just a few meters from the Plaza Mayor. It occupies a rectangular building with a ground floor and a mezzanine level, covering approximately 1,200 square meters, constructed of cast iron, glass, and ceramic trim that allows natural light to filter through. It is the only market in Madrid featuring early 20th-century iron architecture that remains fully intact. Since its 2009 renovation, it has evolved from a traditional food market into a dining destination featuring stalls offering artisanal products, tapas, wines, and tasting areas, catering to both locals and tourists, and is open every day of the week with extended hours.

History

A little background

San Miguel Market — history

he building was designed by architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez and constructed between 1913 and 1916 in two successive phases, so as not to disrupt the commercial activity that was already taking place outdoors in the Plaza de San Miguel. It was officially inaugurated on May 13, 1916, following in the footsteps of the great European iron-and-glass markets such as Les Halles in Paris. Throughout the 20th century, it functioned as a neighborhood food market until it began to fall into decline at the start of the 21st century. After extensive renovation, it reopened in May 2009 as a privately managed gourmet market. It closed temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since regained its status as a leading tourist and culinary destination in Madrid’s historic center.

How to Get a Stall in the San Miguel Market Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the San Miguel Market market, located at Madrid? Since this is a permanent (food) market hall, access to a stall is not handled as street vending: it is obtained through a concession, lease, or transfer of an existing stall, typically through the town council or the merchants’ association that manages the market.

San Miguel Market opens on every day. The exact fee is set by the Madrid town council; please check it before submitting your application.

When a stall becomes available, it is usually awarded through direct concession; if there are multiple interested parties, the town council may hold a public selection process with a waiting list. The transfer of an already occupied stall, if permitted, is negotiated with the outgoing owner and requires municipal approval.

You can contact the Madrid town council at atencionalciudadano@012.madrid.org.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department, or the market merchants' association
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, and proof that you are up to date with your tax and Social Security obligations
  3. Submit the application for a concession, lease, or transfer of the stall
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee or tax, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your pass and take your assigned stall
