A little background

Barrio de la Almendra Street Market — history

he market takes its name from the oval layout of the medieval quarter of Vitoria-Gasteiz—popularly known as “la Almendra” because of its shape—which was designated a historic site in 1997. It was created with the goal of establishing a new gathering place for residents and visitors that would, over time, promote commerce, culture, and leisure throughout the entire Historic District. It is organized by the Federation of Shops and Services of the Medieval Quarter (FEDASOC), part of Gasteiz On, and is sponsored by the town council of Vitoria-Gasteiz. During the pandemic, the market had to move to three fenced-off locations in the squares of La Burullería, Matxete, and Santa María; in April 2022, it returned to the streets of the Old Town after a two-year hiatus, thus regaining its original format and spirit.

With the arrival of the 20th century and the economic transformation of rural areas, the weekly street market in Vitoria-Gasteiz gradually evolved: it gave way to large textile and footwear stalls, incorporated vendors from other provinces, and became professionalized under municipal regulations. Many of today’s market traders are third- or fourth-generation members of families who have been attending this event for decades, maintaining a direct connection to the city’s commercial fabric.

Today, the Almond Quarter street market retains that down-to-earth essence while adapting to new trends: organic products, contemporary crafts, local cuisine, and a close relationship with consumers that large shopping centers cannot offer. The town council and the vendors’ association work together to preserve its traditional character in the very heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz.
