Punta Arabí Hippy Market

Santa Eulalia del Río, Illes Balears

The Punta Arabí Hippy Market is the oldest and largest open-air market in Ibiza, and one of the most recognizable symbols of the island’s hippie heritage. It takes place every Wednesday, from April through October, at the Punta Arabí tourist complex, next to Es Canar Beach, in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu. More than 400 stalls are set up under a vast pine forest and among alleys lined with white bungalows, offering local and international crafts, bohemian fashion, jewelry, leather goods, ceramics, natural cosmetics, home decor, and cuisine from around the world. The market is rounded out with live music, workshops, a children’s area, and performances, making it more of a cultural and tourist event than just a simple bazaar.

History

A little background

Punta Arabí Hippy Market — history

he flea market began in 1973, when the management of what was then the Hotel Club Punta Arabí, in Es Canar, set aside part of its gardens so that the hippies living in Ibiza could sell their creations to the few tourists who were visiting the northern part of the island at the time. In the early days, there were barely four stalls and a small bar known as El Hobbit, a gathering spot for artisans and travelers. With the boom in tourism in the following decades, the market grew to more than four hundred stalls and became the quintessential showcase of the “ad lib” aesthetic and the Ibizan hippie ethos. Today it continues to operate every Wednesday during the tourist season and is considered the oldest artisan market in the Balearic Islands, with more than fifty years of uninterrupted history.
