History

A little background

Founded in 1983.

Mercadillo La Frontera — history

he La Frontera Street Market opened in 1983, seven years after the La Huerta Street Market, and since then has been Petrer’s largest street market: 3,500 m² and 60 stalls, nearly twice the size of its neighbor.

Petrer, together with the neighboring town of Elda, forms an industrial conurbation in the Middle Vinalopó region that has historically specialized in footwear. The construction of the La Frontera Market provided the municipality with a permanent commercial space and served as a hub for the adjacent street market, which benefits from the foot traffic generated by the market hall. The Petrer Town Council regulates itinerant sales through a specific ordinance published on petrer.es, with stalls awarded through a competitive bidding process. The twice-weekly schedule (Wednesdays and Fridays) reflects the municipality’s steady demand and its status as a commercial hub for the region, alongside Elda.

For Merchants

How to Get a Stall at the Mercadillo La Frontera

Would you like to set up a stall at the Mercadillo La Frontera market, located at Petrer? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Mercadillo La Frontera is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. The exact fee is set by the Petrer town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Petrer (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

Check the procedure on the Petrer town council website: https://www.petrer.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)
  4. Pay the applicable municipal fee, if required by the town council
  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
