A little background

he San Clemente Medieval-Renaissance Market commemorates the royal privilege granted to the town by the Catholic Monarchs in 1476—a free market exempt from taxes and duties—in recognition of San Clemente’s loyalty during the War of Succession to the throne of Castile. Although this themed reenactment is held since 2000, coinciding with the eve of Rus Day, it is rooted in a much older tradition of trade and exchange: the Pentecost Monday pilgrimage festival, which dates back more than four centuries. Each year, the event transforms the Plaza Mayor and the streets of the town’s historic-artistic district (designated as such in 1980) into a period-style setting featuring craftsmen, merchants, music, and performances.
