ariñena’s fair tradition predates the current Christmas street market by a long time: it dates back to 1381, when King Peter IV of Aragon granted the town the royal privilege to hold fairs, including those of La Candelaria, Ramos, and La Santa Cruz, as well as a September fair. The historic market was traditionally held on the street known as Calle del Mercado, also called Calle de los Porches—the very same location where the Sariñena Christmas Street Market is held today.
Over time, that fair tradition gave way to more recent events, such as FEMOGA (the Monegros Industrial, Agricultural, and Livestock Fair), which is held since 1987 on the last weekend of September at the former Sariñena cannery. The Christmas Street Market is the most recent addition to this fair calendar: an initiative promoted by the Sariñena Town Council in collaboration with Monegros Empresarial to boost local commerce in the days leading up to Christmas.
Each Christmas edition brings together about fifteen vendors from outside the municipality on Calle del Mercado, alongside local merchants and craftsmen, combining street vendors, food, and family activities that breathe new life—with a contemporary twist—into the town’s commercial tradition, which dates back more than six centuries.
