A little background

an José de la Vega is one of the youngest districts in the municipality of Murcia: until 1990, it was known as Tiñosa and was part of Beniaján, from which it was officially separated on July 26 of that year by a resolution of the town council, under Mayor José Méndez Espino. The name “Tiñosa”—of Mozarabic origin, referring to a clearing devoid of vegetation—is still used by many residents. The area, characterized by fertile plains and traditional irrigation (citrus and fruit trees), experienced a period of industrialization in the canning industry in the mid-20th century linked to families such as the Sánchez Manzanares, whose old chimney still stands in the current townscape. Since its establishment as an independent district, the population has doubled, rising from 2,254 residents in the 1991 census to approximately 4,860 in 2019, establishing itself as a residential area within the expanding metropolitan area of Murcia.
