Alicante Central Market

Alicante, Alicante

Located on Alfonso X el Sabio Avenue, on the site of the former San Francisco bastion, the Central Market is Alicante’s main food market and one of the city’s most representative examples of Valencian Modernism. The building, with its eclectic style and Modernist ornamentation, is organized into two floors: a half-basement housing the fish market and a main floor with stalls selling meat, cold cuts, fruits, vegetables, pickles, and local specialties. Steel beams and pillars support sloped roofs fitted with skylights that flood the interior with natural light. With nearly 300 active stalls, it serves as a daily hub for Alicante’s local commerce and a showcase for produce from the region’s vegetable gardens, the Mediterranean, and the area’s traditional cured meats.

History

A little background

Alicante Central Market — history

licante’s Central Market was built on the site of the former San Francisco bastion, part of the city’s defensive wall. The first design was drawn up in 1911 by architect Enrique Sánchez Sedeño, but it was never built. In 1914, architects Francisco Fajardo Guardiola and Próspero Lafarga drew up a second design, and Juan Vidal Ramos oversaw its construction between 1917 and 1921, the year it opened. The building, in an eclectic style with Modernist motifs, became the city’s main urban market upon its opening. A tragic episode marked its history: on May 25, 1938, during the Civil War, the Italian air force bombed the area surrounding the market in one of the worst massacres of civilians during the conflict, leaving more than 300 dead and nearly a thousand wounded. After the war, the market underwent a series of renovations that modernized its facilities while preserving the monumental façade and original structure, and today it remains the culinary heart of Alicante’s historic center.

How to Get a Stall at the Alicante Central Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the Alicante Central Market market, located at Alicante? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Alicante Central Market is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Alicante town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Alicante (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

Check the procedure on the Alicante town council website: https://www.alicante.es.
