Elche Central Market
The Central Market of Elche is the main food market in Elche/Elx, in the province of Alicante, and one of the leading culinary landmarks in the Baix Vinalopó region. The market building, located in the historic center next to Plaça de les Flors, houses stalls selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, cured meats, and local specialties such as the Elche date, the undisputed symbol of the city and its famous Palm Grove, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Open every weekday morning, the Elche Central Market is a regular destination for both locals and tourists visiting the Palm Grove and the Misteri d’Elx. Its stalls offer produce from the Elche countryside and the Camp d’Elx, with Mediterranean cuisine as the common thread. A stroll through its aisles, amid the scents of dates, pomegranates, and fresh fish, with the rustling of palm trees in the background, perfectly captures the city’s vibrant character.

A little background

lche’s Central Market was built in the first half of the 20th century to replace the open-air market that had traditionally been held in the Plaça de les Flors and around the Basilica of Santa María, bringing the city’s food supply under one roof. Through successive renovations throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, the Elche Central Market has been modernized without losing its role as the city’s premier food market.
The Elche City Council manages the Elche Central Market under a concession agreement and has promoted renovations to integrate it into the city’s tourism and gastronomic life, taking advantage of its proximity to the Palmeral and the grounds of the Basilica of Santa María—a heritage site linked to the Misteri d’Elx, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. All of this makes the Elche Central Market a must-see destination for culinary tourism in the province of Alicante.
