Valencia Central Market
Valencia’s Central Market is one of Europe’s largest food markets and an iconic example of Valencian Modernism. It stands in Plaza de la Ciutat de Bruges, right in the heart of the historic district, across from the Silk Exchange and the Church of Los Santos Juanes. It covers an area of approximately 8,000 square meters, with more than 200 stalls dedicated primarily to fresh produce: fish, seafood, fruits and vegetables, meats, cured meats, spices, and pickles. Its structure combines masonry walls with large wrought-iron frameworks, polychrome stained-glass windows, and ceramic domes that flood the interior with natural light. It has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest and continues to serve as the city’s premier food market, open in the mornings from Monday through Saturday.

A little background

he current Central Market replaced the old open-air market that had been held next to the Lonja since medieval times. The project was commissioned in 1910 to the Barcelona architects Francesc Guàrdia i Vial and Alexandre Soler i March, disciples of Domènech i Montaner, and construction began in 1914. Project management was later taken over by the Valencian architects Enrique Viedma Vidal and Ángel Romaní Verdeguer, who completed construction in early 1928. The market was officially inaugurated in November of that same year. Its architectural style—featuring iron and glass structures, glazed ceramics, mosaics, and Gothic-inspired elements—soon established it as one of the masterpieces of Valencian Modernism. It was designated a Site of Cultural Interest on May 2, 2007, and has undergone successive renovations to adapt it to its current uses.
