History

A little background

Zaragoza Central Market — history

aragoza’s Plaza del Mercado has been the city’s market for about seven hundred years, ever since a king of Aragon decided to move it from the Cinegia Gate—now Plaza de España—to the area around the Toledo Gate. The San Pablo neighborhood grew up around it, and for centuries, sales took place outdoors.

The current building was designed in 1895 by the Aragonese architect Félix Navarro Pérez, commissioned by the Sociedad Nuevo Mercado de Zaragoza. Navarro had visited the 1889 Paris World’s Fair and was familiar with Les Halles, influences that are reflected in his design: a rectangular floor plan with three naves—the central one being taller and wider—resting on a half-basement intended for storage. He used an iron structure but clad the facades with brick and stone because the aesthetic qualities of iron were still not widely appreciated. Construction began on January 8, 1902, and required the demolition of part of the Roman wall.

It was inaugurated in 1903. In 1969, it was nearly demolished as part of a project to widen César Augusto Avenue, but was spared thanks to pressure from local residents. It has been a National Historic Monument since 1978 and a Site of Cultural Interest since 1982. A comprehensive restoration was carried out between 2018 and 2020.

How to Get a Stall at the Zaragoza Central Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the Zaragoza Central Market market, located at Zaragoza? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Zaragoza Central Market is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Zaragoza town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Zaragoza (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

You can contact the Zaragoza town council at mercadosmunicipales@zaragoza.es.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
  2. Gather the necessary documentation: registration as a self-employed individual or business, proof of being up to date with the tax authorities and Social Security, and liability insurance
  3. Submit the application for a street vending permit (through the online portal or at the registry office)

  5. Pick up your authorization and bring it with you on market day
