A little background

he Santa Pola food market stands on the site of what is popularly known as the “Broken Church.” That church, designed as the “New Church,” began construction on October 10, 1861, next to the castle-fortress, but repeated collapses of the vault and changes in master builders prevented its completion.
In the 1930s, the City Council decided to use the remaining ruins to build the municipal market there. Construction took place between 1935 and 1938. The main façade still retains traces of the original religious project, such as the base of the tower on which the bell tower was to rise and the large entrance door with its staircase; various historians have noted its resemblance to the Church of San Jaime in Guardamar del Segura.
