History

A little background

Guadalajara Municipal Market — history

he tradition of markets and fairs in Guadalajara dates back to the 13th century, when Alfonso X the Wise granted the city that privilege, and to the 16th century, when Philip II authorized the holding of market days on Tuesdays in the Plaza Mayor. To provide a home for this trade, the town council decided in 1883 to build a market hall in the Plaza de la Antigua, designed by municipal architect Mariano Medarde, which opened in 1887. The building underwent its first major renovation in 1962 and another—more controversial due to its lengthy duration—beginning in 1995; in recent years, it has been restored with European ERDF funds, incorporating a multipurpose space for conferences and exhibitions.
