Abastos de Santiago Market
The Santiago de Compostela Food Market is the second most visited site in the city, after the cathedral, and an essential part of daily life in Santiago. Built entirely of granite, it consists of eight parallel aisles crowned by whitewashed barrel vaults that evoke the traditional architecture of Galician pazos and hórreos. Its stalls showcase the bounty of the northwestern peninsula: fish and shellfish from the Galician estuaries, Galician veal, cheeses with protected designation of origin, cured meats, cornbread, vegetables, and the famous “mariscadoras” and “paisanas” who bring their produce directly from the garden or the sea. In addition to the market area, it features a cooking school, restaurants, and cultural activities that have made it a culinary and tourist landmark in Galicia.

A little background

arket activity in this area around the Plaza de Abastos has been documented since the 19th century, when an earlier market existed on the same site. The current building was designed by the Asturian architect Joaquín Vaquero Palacios (1900–1998), who won the competition organized by the City Council and oversaw construction between 1937 and 1941. Vaquero opted for a regionalist architectural style sensitive to the site: he eschewed the iron-and-glass architecture common in contemporary markets and instead used local granite carved by stonemasons from the Santiago de Compostela guild, integrating the market into the historic city’s monumental fabric. The design, featuring eight independent naves with vaults and open courtyards between them, reflects the idea—expressed by the architect himself—of bringing the countryside into the city, facilitating ventilation and allowing female farmers to sell their produce outdoors. Considered a landmark of 20th-century Spanish architecture, it is part of the historic complex of Santiago, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
