Colón Street Market
The Colón Market is one of the pinnacles of Valencian Modernism and today one of the city’s most unique gastronomic and cultural venues. The building, which covers approximately 3,500 square meters, features a basilica-style layout with three naves and is distinguished by its two monumental facades topped by large arches, with exposed brick, wrought iron, and polychrome ceramic trencadís that evoke Catalan Modernism. After ceasing to operate as a traditional market at the end of the 20th century, it was renovated and converted into a shopping and leisure center that houses cafés, restaurants, cocktail bars, an horchata shop, gourmet stores, and three original food stalls: a deli, a fish market, and a fruit stand. It regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural activities organized by the Valencia City Council.

A little background

n the early 20th century, the development of Valencia’s Ensanche district created a need for a market to serve the new bourgeoisie settling in the neighborhood. The project was commissioned to the Valencian architect Francisco Mora Berenguer (1875–1961), who trained in Barcelona, where he became intimately familiar with the work of Gaudí and Puig i Cadafalch—influences that are evident in the final design. Construction began in 1914, and the market was inaugurated on December 24, 1916. For decades it served as the food market for the Ensanche neighborhood, but the gradual relocation of businesses and the building’s deterioration led to its closure in the 1970s. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983. Between 2003 and 2009, the Valencia City Council undertook a complex restoration project that included the excavation of four basement levels beneath the building without altering its original structure; this project received the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects. Reopened in 2003 with a new commercial and cultural purpose, it is today one of the best-preserved examples of Valencian Modernism.
