La Cebada Market
The Mercado de la Cebada is a municipal food market located in the square of the same name, in the heart of the La Latina neighborhood, in Madrid’s historic center. It is one of the capital’s most iconic markets, with more than 6,000 square meters spread across two retail floors, a storage floor, and a parking floor. It is recognizable from the outside by its six large red vaulted roofs, a distinctive feature of La Latina’s urban landscape. Its stalls offer fruit, vegetables, fish, seafood, meats, Iberian cured meats, cheeses, and gourmet products, and in recent years it has been reinventing itself with tasting areas, kitchens, and community activities that coexist alongside the traditional stalls.

A little background

laza de la Cebada has been home to outdoor commercial activity since the 16th century, when farmers from the outskirts came to sell barley intended both for the king’s cavalry and for private consumption—an activity that gave the square its name. By the late 18th century, Madrid’s population growth made it necessary to provide the city with covered markets to ensure better sanitary conditions. The market’s first building was designed in 1868 by architect Mariano Calvo y Pereira, modeled after Les Halles in Paris, with a wrought-iron structure made in London resting on a foundation of ashlar and brick. Construction began in 1870, and the market was inaugurated on June 11, 1875, by King Alfonso XII. That 19th-century building was demolished in 1956 due to hygiene issues and replaced in 1958 by the current building, with its functional design and red vaulted ceilings, which continues to serve as a commercial landmark in the La Latina neighborhood.

How to Get a Stall in the La Cebada Market Market
Would you like to set up a stall at the La Cebada Market market, located at Madrid? Since this is a permanent (food) market hall, access to a stall is not handled as street vending: it is obtained through a concession, lease, or transfer of an existing stall, typically through the town council or the merchants’ association that manages the market.
La Cebada Market opens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Madrid town council; please check it before submitting your application.
When a stall becomes available, it is usually awarded through direct concession; if there are multiple interested parties, the town council may hold a public selection process with a waiting list. The transfer of an already occupied stall, if permitted, is negotiated with the outgoing owner and requires municipal approval.
You can contact the Madrid town council at atencionalciudadano@012.madrid.org.
