History

A little background

he Mercado de los Mostenses takes its name from the former Premonstratensian convent of San Norberto, which occupied this site in Madrid beginning in 1611. Following the confiscation of church property, the magistrate, the Marquis of Pontejos, designated the space to bring together vendors from the nearby squares, and in 1875, an iron-and-glass market designed by architect Mariano Calvo Pereira was inaugurated, at the same time as the Cebada Market. That first building was demolished in 1925 to make way for the construction of the third section of the Gran Vía, despite protests from local residents, and the current market, with its rationalist design, was built slightly further north and opened in 1946.
