A little background
he Moors and Christians Festival in Mutxamel is held in honor of the town’s patron saint, the Mare de Déu de Loreto, and has been designated a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest. Their documented origins date back to the mid-19th century, when, around 1843, there were only two processional groups—one representing the Moors and the other the Christians—that accompanied the Virgin in the procession; beginning in 1865, the organization began to take on its current form, and in 1874 the name “Moors and Christians Festival” was adopted. Until 1910, the festivities were held between March 1 and 3, alongside the Miracle of the Tear, and that year they were moved to September, where they remain. As with other patron saint festivals in Valencia, the street fair with stalls has always been part of the atmosphere of the “big week,” and today it is regulated as a temporary market with permits issued by the town council.
