Objetos en Desuso Market
The Market for Unused Items, also known as Ekoazoka, is an event for exchanging and reusing items organized by the Leioa town council (Bizkaia) at the Euskal Etxeen Plaza II. Unlike a weekly street market, this initiative does not have a fixed schedule: it is held once or twice a year, usually on a Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. At the Leioa Market for Unused Items, there is no buying, selling, or bartering: residents bring items in good condition that they no longer use (clothing, household goods, toys, small furniture, etc.), and anyone can take what they need for free, under the motto that “things have value based on need.” The event is organized by Herrigune, Leioa’s citizen participation department, in collaboration with the volunteer group Ekotaldea. Anyone looking for street markets or markets in Leioa should keep in mind that this is not a weekly street market: it’s best to check the call for stall applications for each event on the municipal website or at Herrigune Leioa before heading to Euskal Etxeen Plaza II.

Everything You Need to Know
A little background
he Market for Unused Items began in Leioa around 2010 as an initiative of Kuboa, the municipal sustainability program, aimed at extending the useful life of objects and reducing waste. In its early editions, held at the Euskal Etxeen Plaza II, it already brought together numerous families eager to find new homes for items they no longer used.
Over the years, the initiative evolved into what is now known as Ekoazoka, while maintaining the same spirit: nothing is bought or sold; everything is given away or taken according to each person’s needs. The Leioa town council even received recognition as a model of municipal best practice for this circular economy project.
Currently, the organization is managed by Herrigune, the citizen participation department, with support from the volunteer group Ekotaldea. This market should not be confused with other commercial events in Leioa, such as the Agricultural and Livestock Fair, Umore Azoka, the Solidarity Book Fair, or Merkaleioa, which are separate events organized by other entities and are not covered in this entry.
