Everything You Need to Know
A little background
he Mercado del Val is the oldest 19th-century iron market still standing in Valladolid, following the demolition in the 1960s of its twin markets, the Campillo and the Portugalete—all three of which were built on the initiative of Mayor Miguel Íscar. Designed by municipal architect Joaquín Ruiz Sierra and inspired by Les Halles in Paris, it was built between 1878 and 1892 next to the Church of San Benito el Real, featuring an all-metal nave 112 meters long. It lost its large central dome during a renovation in 1900, was restored for the first time in 1981–82, and, after being completely gutted in 2014, reopened in 2016 as Spain’s first bioclimatic market.
