Mercado Marinero de Guardamar del Segura
The Guardamar del Segura Seafood Market is set up on Avenida de Cervantes during the patron saint festivities in honor of San Jaime and the Moors and Christians festivities, which are organized by the town council and the Central Board of the Moors and Christians. It is open three afternoons, Monday through Wednesday, starting at 6:00 p.m. The stalls feature crafts and food. The craft stalls offer leatherwork, woodwork, ceramics, and glassware, as well as handmade jewelry, natural soaps, textiles, and items inspired by the sea. The food stalls offer cheeses, cured meats, honey, traditional sweets, nuts, spices, and preserves. The market is not just about shopping: musicians, sailors, pirates, jugglers, and stilt walkers wander along the avenue, and the program includes street theater, musical performances, crafts workshops, demonstrations of traditional maritime trades, children’s activities, and fire shows.

A little background

he patron saint festivities of Guardamar del Segura are held in July in honor of Saint James, featuring the Moors and Christians festivities—designated as an Event of Regional Tourist Interest—which bring together ten troupes from both sides. Its hallmark is the “Embassy of the Signing of the Treaty of Tudmir,” which reenacts the treaty by which, in the year 713, the Visigothic nobleman Teodomiro ceded to the troops of Abd al-Aziz ibn Musa the territories where the town is located— a historical episode unique to this town that is not reenacted at any other festival in the region. Added to this program are the legend of L’Encantà by the Segura River, the correfocs, and the guerrilla battles. The seaside street market is the commercial highlight of this festival week and reflects the town’s fishing heritage; it is held in the town center in the afternoon and evening to accompany the parade-goers. Since it is a temporary market, it is not included in the ordinance governing non-permanent markets with fixed locations: its location, dates, and conditions are approved each year along with the festival program.
