History

A little background

Ávila Municipal Market — history

vila’s first covered market was designed in 1893 by architect Enrique María Repullés, who was also responsible for major restorations of the city’s monuments. That cast-iron building opened its doors in 1898 and retained its original appearance until it was demolished in the 1950s.

In the 1960s, the facility was expanded on the same site with the addition of a second floor, a layout that has essentially been preserved. In 1978, the upper terrace was covered with a glass-enclosed gallery to increase the number of stalls.

After years of gradual decline, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation that was completed in September 2025, with the addition of a supermarket that allowed traditional merchants to remain in business. The upper floor houses municipal offices.

How to Get a Stall at the Ávila Municipal Market

Would you like to set up a stall at the Ávila Municipal Market market, located at Ávila? To sell as a street vendor, you need a municipal street vending permit or license: this is issued by the town council, not the market itself, and typically requires that you be registered as a self-employed individual or a business, be in good standing with the tax authorities and Social Security, and have liability insurance that covers the stall.

Ávila Municipal Market is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Ávila town council; please check it before submitting your application.

Applications are submitted to the town council, usually online or in person, and may be granted directly (if there are open stalls) or through a public call for stall applications with a waiting list when demand exceeds the number of available stalls. You can download the municipal ordinance on street vending from Ávila (check the town council’s official website to make sure it’s still in effect, in case it has been updated).

You can contact the Ávila town council at empresas@ayuntavila.com.

  1. Contact the town council's commerce or markets department
