A little background

he medieval squares in Pontevedra’s historic district have long served as marketplaces: bread and milk were sold in Teucro Square, fruit and vegetables in Verdura Square, and chickens in Méndez Núñez Square. To improve sanitation, the first covered market was built in 1886 next to the Burgo Bridge, designed by architect Alejandro Sesmero; it was demolished in the 1940s to make way for a larger building on the same site, which opened in January 1948. After fifty years of operation, the market was renovated in 2003 by architect César Portela, who built an underground parking garage beneath the building and reconstructed the market while preserving its original facades and stone stairways.
