ivestock transactions have long been intertwined with the economic and social life of Torrelavega: the town has been authorized to hold a free market since 1799, and in the 19th century it was home to the largest livestock market on the Cantabrian coast, which was declared a site of national interest in 1891. To accommodate this growth, the current market complex was built, designed by architect Federico Cabrillo Vázquez and engineer José Calavera Ruiz, and inaugurated on June 27, 1973, by the then Prince and Princess of Spain. Popularly known as “la Cuadrona” or “el Ferial,” it is notable for the large 250-meter metal vault in its main hall, which earned it the Sercometal Award for best metal construction in 1975, and was later named after Jesús Collado Soto, the mayor who spearheaded the project.
