A little background
ince 1947, the La Vila Joiosa farmers’ market has been located on Canalejas Street, next to City Hall. Behind the facade of the original building was an open-air plaza with a dirt floor and white stalls featuring green metal shutters, serving as a gathering place for fishermen, farmers, chocolate makers, and town residents. Small arches separated the flower stalls from the vegetable stalls.
On May 17, 2003, the Mercat de La Vila reopened on that same site in a new building, designed by the Soto & Maroto architectural firm, which replaced the traditional market and also incorporated municipal offices. Even today, there are still stalls run by third- and fourth-generation families.
