Santa Caterina Market
The Santa Caterina Indoor Market is an indoor market located on Francesc Cambó Avenue, in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina, and La Ribera neighborhood, right in the heart of Barcelona’s Old Town. It is one of the city’s most recognizable markets thanks to its spectacular undulating roof made of multicolored ceramic tiles, the result of a comprehensive renovation designed by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. Inside, traditional stalls selling fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, baked goods, and deli meats coexist with bars, restaurants, and tasting areas. In addition to being a vibrant neighborhood market, it has become an architectural and tourist landmark included in Barcelona’s contemporary architecture tours.

A little background

ince the 13th century, the site of the current market had been occupied by the Gothic convent and church of Santa Caterina, belonging to the Dominican Order, one of the first Gothic churches in Barcelona. Following the confiscation and burning of convents in 1835, the town council received the church-owned land and decided to build a covered market there to modernize the city’s food supply. Construction began in 1844 based on a design by architect Josep Mas i Vila, and the market opened in 1848, becoming Barcelona’s first covered market. Between 1997 and 2005, a comprehensive renovation was carried out, designed by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of the EMBT studio, which preserved the original perimeter structure and added the distinctive undulating roof made of polychrome ceramic tiles inspired by the Modernist trencadís technique. Miralles passed away in 2000 without seeing the project completed, and it was Tagliabue who brought the project to fruition. The reopening, initially scheduled for 2001, was delayed until May 2005 following the discovery of significant archaeological remains from the former convent, which are now visible within the market itself.

How to Get a Stall in the Santa Caterina Market Market
Would you like to set up a stall at the Santa Caterina Market market, located at Barcelona? Since this is a permanent (food) market hall, access to a stall is not handled as street vending: it is obtained through a concession, lease, or transfer of an existing stall, typically through the town council or the merchants’ association that manages the market.
Santa Caterina Market opens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The exact fee is set by the Barcelona town council; please check it before submitting your application.
When a stall becomes available, it is usually awarded through direct concession; if there are multiple interested parties, the town council may hold a public selection process with a waiting list. The transfer of an already occupied stall, if permitted, is negotiated with the outgoing owner and requires municipal approval. You can download the municipal ordinance on markets from Barcelona (check the town council's official website to make sure it's still in effect, in case it has been updated).
Contact the Commerce or Markets Department of the town council of Barcelona to find out the exact procedure.

- Submit the application for a concession, lease, or transfer of the stall
- Pay the applicable municipal fee or tax, if required by the town council
- Pick up your pass and take your assigned stall
