he Mercat del Riurau is held under the riurau of Senyor de Benissadeví, in Jesús Pobre. Riuraus are traditional structures of the Marina Alta region, featuring open arcades, built to protect blanched grapes from the rain while they dried in the sun: a key feature of the landscape and the local economy when grape production dominated the area in the 19th century.
The market began as an initiative of the Jesús Pobre Neighborhood Association to revitalize the local economy and provide a direct outlet for the produce of small-scale farmers in the region, while also restoring this traditional space. Today, farmers, bakers, winemakers, and craftsmen set up shop under its arches to sell their goods directly to customers—without middlemen—including fruit and vegetables grown on terraced fields, bread and homemade jams, cocas and pastissets, olive oil, and wine.
Every Sunday, the market features live cultural performances, and the calendar includes its own events such as the Trobada de la Tomaca Autòctona in July or the Festa de Batre el Blat, which was staged in 2014. On the first Sunday of every month, the market gives way to the antiques and collectables fair organized by the Marina Alta Association of Collectors and Brocanteurs.
