A little background

he Mercat de Sant Antoni is one of the largest indoor markets in Barcelona. It began as an open-air market in front of the Sant Antoni Gate in the old city walls, and its construction—designed by municipal architect Antoni Rovira i Trias—began in 1872, making it the first market built outside the city walls after they were demolished. It was inaugurated in 1882 by Mayor Rius i Taulet, and over the years, the surrounding area gave rise to the Sunday flea market known as els Encants de Sant Antoni, which today also includes a traditional book and collectibles market on Sundays.
