A little background
he origins of commerce at this site date back to the Christian conquest of Valencia in 1238, when the Market Square became established as the city’s main supply hub. To replace the old open-air stalls with a covered, sanitary facility, the town council commissioned architects Francesc Guàrdia i Vial and Alexandre Soler i March—both of whom had trained under Domènech i Montaner—to design a building, construction of which began in 1914; following changes in project leadership, Enrique Viedma and Ángel Romaní completed the project, and the Central Market was inaugurated in January 1928. Considered one of the great gems of Valencian Modernism, it combines iron, glass, ceramics, and a large dome, and today it remains one of the largest market halls in Europe.
