Esperanza Flea Market
El Rastro de Esperanza is Santander’s Sunday flea market, held next to the historic La Esperanza Market, right in the heart of the capital of Cantabria. The Rastro de Esperanza features stalls selling collectibles, antique books, vinyl records, vintage clothing, tools, restored furniture, and costume jewelry, attracting a regular clientele of vintage enthusiasts in the Cantabrian capital. The Rastro de Esperanza blends seamlessly with the activity at the Mercado de La Esperanza—a 1904 iron-and-glass building designated a Site of Cultural Interest—creating one of Santander’s most distinctive Sunday tourist routes. With the city’s Atlantic atmosphere and the sea breeze from northern Cantabria in the background, it’s a must-see stop for Sunday leisure activities in Cantabria.

A little background

he La Esperanza Market in Santander was designed by architects Juan Moya Idígoras and Eduardo Reynals and opened on October 15, 1904, in the city center. Its design, featuring wrought iron and glass atop a stone base, draws parallels with the great 19th-century European markets, and it was designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985.
In the wake of the market’s popularity, an open-air Sunday flea market began to be held in the surrounding area in the 20th century, which the Santander City Council has since regulated as an authorized street market. Today, the Rastro de Esperanza is one of the most popular Sunday events in the Cantabrian capital and a must-see for vintage and collectibles enthusiasts visiting northern Spain.
